A Midlands e-Science Centre of Excellence Proposal:Modelling and Analysis of Large Complex Systems

Modelling and Analysis of Large Complex Systems

This proposal is to create a Midlands e-Science Centre of Excellence at the University of Birmingham focused on Modelling and Analysis of Le Complex Systems as its Area of Excellence. The University of Birmingham is host to a very substantial body of researchers in science and en involved in computational modelling of large-scale systems: 19 research groups from 7 schools (nearly all 5/5 rated), totalling 200+ full-time sl PhD students are joining this effort, plus two groups from the University of Coventry. The proposed Centre will be a virtual distributed grouping research activities, with a base in the School of Computer Science. Its uniquely distinguishing aspect is the focus on long-term research into de effective algorithms and software technology for the Grid and their application to complex problems leading to scientific advancement or industi benefit. Four specialist themes are identified: (1) Simulation of evolving systems of interacting elements, (2) Large-scale grid-enabled distribute simulation and interoperability, (3) Distributed algorithms and compact storage for mathematical solutions of large complex systems, and (4) D mining and large-scale visualisation. The Centres computational resources consist of several parallel and cluster computers distributed in diffe departments and the Universitys IT infrastructure, which includes the Regional Network Entry Point to JANET for the Midlands MidIVIAN netwo campus-wide Gigabit Ethernet network and a new powerful large-scale visualisation system.
