An e-Science Centre of Excellence at Leicester

We propose to establish an e-science centre of excellence at Leicester, building on our local expertise in astronomy, astrophysical modelling and space research and linking into key local activities such as our major involvement in the AstroGrid project and in running the UKAFF national facility. By developing e-science applications for problems in our area of expertise, our aim is to extend and enhance our e-science capabilities for the benefit of research activities locally and nationally as well as making a real contribution to the national e-science developments. Our initial activities will focus on several key application areas not covered by present e-science projects, including the provision of Grid interfaces to astronomical data collections, data warehousing studies, grid-enabling of numerical modeling techniques, publication of numerical models on the Grid, Grid-based visualisation techniques and time-series data-mining. The Centre will provide expertise on applying Grid-based solutions to a much wider range of problems than just astrophysics, since experience gained in this area is expected to to have much wider applicability. We will maintain an AccessGrid node at Leicester, providing a valuable local facility for promoting collaborative working and distributed meetings.
