MultiFlora II: combining information extraction and knowledge representation for biodiversity informatics

MultiFlora II

MultiFlora I is establishing that Information Extraction (IE) can be improved by analysis of parallel texts, and can be a tool for biodiversity research. MultiFlora II will (1) port the implementation to GATE II, a robust, mature natural language processing environment, contributing to NLP research, with IE at Sheffield; (2) ground the work in a structured domain model built in the GRAIL knowledge representation formalism, with Medical Informatics at Manchester; (3) extend taxonomic coverage, increasing the value to biodiversity research, with Botany at the Natural History Museum. This will produce a reliable, wide-coverage, well-grounded system for acquiring, representing, and integrating information from botanical texts, distinctively placed to contribute to future research in biodiversity informatics. (Joint with grant 17050).
