Understanding the Nature and the Role of Gesture in 1-to-1 Conversation

This is an applied project dedicated to understanding the purchase of eSocial Science applications to developing multi-modal corpora of naturally occurring conversation. The project focuses down on a specific range of gestures – particularly ‘nods’ of the head in one-to-one conversation – to unpack and explore at an early stage the technical, social science, ethical and methodological challenges involved in developing multi-modal corpora that marry the spoken word with embodied conduct to support comprehensive analysis of the contextual character of natural language use in social interaction. The project complements core strands of work to be carried out by the eSocial Science Node at the University of Nottingham.
