Designer Algorithms for Astronomical Data Mining

Designer Algorithms

The Virtual Observatory era demands techniques which will allow fast, automated classification and extraction of key physical properties for very large datasets, and the ability to visualise the structure of highly multidimensional data, and extract, and study substructures in a flexible way. Fortunately, such techniques have been the subject of intensive development in the Computer Science (CS) and AI communities, and are now being increasingly deployed over a wide range of subject areas,. The aim of this proposal is to introduce such techniques into AtsroGrid with the full involvement of computer scientists who have been developing and applying them to various fields. Such developments are essential if astronomers are not to be simply overwhelmed by the volume and dimensionality of the datasets which will oon be available to them.
