Abstract: The paper presents an ESRC e-social science demonstrator on the application of the grid to address contested social science concepts such as social exclusion, the relationship between youth and crime, and the influence of social context on individual pathways. The project analyses detailed quantitative and qualitative data in a grid environment, develops a platform for data sharing among academia and practitioners based on the OpenGIS specifications, and critically evaluates the relationships between different communities of practice involved in the project and the grid.
