Abstract: The NERC DataGrid vision is to provide earth scientists with improved abilities in discovery and using data produced by NERC funded projects. It has developed and implemented a metadata taxonomy to enable a flexible and extensible infrastructure, capable of supporting the the data produced by the diversity of disciplines represented in these projects. The keys to this are the identification of the roles of each metadata type, and the ability of the various metadata types to be linked together loosely, allowing for different implementations of the schemae fulfilling the roles to satisfy domain specific requirements.
