Abstract: This paper presents an experimental study of the performance of SOAP with Attachments(SwA). The performance of different SOAP variants: standard SOAP, SwA using MIME, SwA using DIME, and XSOAP, are evaluated in communicating multiple floating-point matrices and a number of complex data structs. The performance metrics used for evaluation include roundtrip time, SOAP message size, and serialization/deserialization overhead. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate that SOAP performance in communicating large volumes of data could be simply and effectively improved by adopting SwA. Moreover, SwA using DIME is identified to be a faster and more efficient message processing approach than using MIME.
