Abstract: The vision of the semantic GRID includes automatic discovery and processing of very large amounts of scientific data. However in many disciplines data are currently published in ‘free text’ form such as journal articles, preprints and reports and are never subsequently available in conventional databases. For example, we have estimated that 99% of all published chemical spectra are in free-text form and not machine-understandable. Our aim is to adapt and develop a range of Natural Language Processing (NLP) technologies to allow automatic or semi-automatic extraction of information from this free-text data with high precision. We have developed techniques on chemical publications and expect them to be extensible to other disciplines.
