Abstract: The research goal of Scientific Data Grid is to integrate more than 200 scientific databases distributed in more than 40 institutes under Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) to realize effective sharing of the distributed and heterogeneous mass data resources. Grid technology, especially data grid technology, is adopted in the integration. Application systems that have practical importance for scientific research will also be developed. The major research tasks of this project include construction of the system platform of the scientific Data Grid, the development of necessary middleware for the Scientific Data Grid, and the development of the demonstration application systems such as China Virtual Observatory based on the Scientific Data Grid. The platform of SDG has been built. Basic middleware for SDG has been developed. Databases for astronomical data have been built and integrated into the SDG environment. Key technology for implementing the Virtual Observatory has been investigated and the prototype is being developed.
