Abstract: As the amount of materials and the services available to support remote learning about and using grids increases and matures, it is clear that one of the most important bottlenecks is the clarification of policies and mechanisms for IPR management. Much of this material and effort is derived from the activities of academics. While individual projects may have clear policies for re-use and dissemination of materials created specifically for that project; in general higher education institutions (which own all of the output of their academic staff) are currently investigating the implications of distributed technologies for their business models. The development of recommendations in this area is therefore extremely timely as it can be used to feed into the policy development process of institutions, and also national and international bodies to support the cooperative efforts which have already developed in this area.
