Abstract: Iugo and Memetic were two projects within the VRE programme. Iugo organises and allows access to information related to research events. Memetic records and annotates Access Grid sessions allowing navigable playback. The technologies are being integrated in a VRE project Collaborative Research Events on the Web (CREW) to allow the full range of collaborative research events information to be interrogated by semantic search tools. This paper examines how the projects have contributed to the definition of VRE's; issues common to the projects in the use of semantic techniques and in legal and other perspectives; and how lessons learned concerning user engagement are being applied within CREW to ensure greater levels of usability and integration of the technology to genuine user scenarios.
