Abstract: This is a working paper on the current issues in Bioinformatics by the European Commission as part of the Fifth Framework Programme. Intellectual property rights (IPR) and public policy are set to threaten the long term future of European research in this area. Increasingly, grid technologies and e-Science applications are ensuring shared, integrated data: while being good for science problems can arise with IPR.
