PLEASE NOTE THIS MEETING IS BEING HELD AT QUEEN’S UNIVERSITY BELFAST.

The UK astronomical community is now considering plans for its involvement in the next generation of sky survey projects, which could see first light in the period 2015-2020. Assessing what role the UK may take in each of them requires answers to a set of scientific, technical and political questions. These questions are closely related, and a year-long eSI Theme provides a way to gather the UK community views and form an opinion. Queen’s will host the second meeting in the eSI theme, which is focused on the transient sky. The rationale for this meeting will be :

  • Review the current, and upcoming sky surveys with UK involvement
  • Identify the leadership roles that we can take
  • Judge the community interest in joining future synoptic sky surveys
  • Review the scientific interest in the transient sky and the computational challenges
  • Review our aspirations for ground-based and space based involvement for example (but not limited to) Pan-STARRS, LSST, EUCLID/JDEM
  • Identify the technical expertise we have and what we could contribute to
  • Identify the computational challenges associated with time domain survey science
  • How we inform STFC + FUAP/NUAP/GBFR of community desires

Target Audience

This meeting is intended for UK scientists involved in time domain surveys and science of the transient sky. This includes explosive transients, moving objects and time variable phenomena. We aim to combine discussion on ground and space based surveys and multi-wavelength synergy.
