Heterogeneity between genetically identical cells within a population is widespread among microbes. Differences between cells can be caused by random flipping of genetic switches which control cell behaviour, or by ’noise’ in cellular chemical reactions, which typically operate with small numbers of molecules. In recent years, there has been wide interest in modelling such stochastic effects. This workshop will focus on what role population heterogeneity plays in microbial infection. By bringing together microbiologists and modellers with different perspectives, we hope to determine productive directions for future research and collaboration in this important area.

A public lecture is being held on the 27 September at 16:00 and a drinks reception will follow the lecture. Everyone is invited to attend the lecture and drinks reception.

Target Audience

This meeting is intended for:

  • Microbiologists working on stochasticity in genetic networks
  • Evolutionary biologists interested in the evolutionary role of phenotypic heterogeneity
  • Physicists, mathematicians and computer scientists interested in stochasticity in genetic networks and population modelling
