The Ecosystem Services for Poverty Alleviation Programme (ESPA) will support innovative research designed to generate new evidence leading to a step change in global understanding about the way that ecosystem services can contribute to the reduction of poverty. Funded by the UK’s Natural Environment Research Council, Economic and Social Research Council and the Department for International Development ESPA’s research will bridge the social and natural sciences and is part of the wider Living With Environmental Change programme (www.lwec.org.uk).

The ESPA programme will issue an Announcement of Opportunity during September 2010 asking for research proposals to support a number of consortia who will deliver the world-class research that is required to underpin the programme. ESPA’s Consortium projects will be the largest part of the programme and are expected to bring together the world’s leading researchers in partnerships that links disciplines and ESPA’s geographical regions (Africa, South Asia, China and Amazonia).

Webcast

This meeting was webcast live.

For the majority of the meetings that we broadcast, we keep a copy (for a limited period) and make it available from the event material page. This copy of the webcast is normally available the day after the meeting.

Target Audience

The ESPA Research Development Workshop hosted by the e-Science Institute will support potential applicants who intend to submit applications to the call. Participants will be able to interact with representatives of the funding agencies, staff from the ESPA Directorate and international experts. Priority for participation at this event will be giving to researchers who are currently funded through either ESPA Partnership and Project Development (PPD) grants or ESPA Programme Framework grants as well as researchers funded under the earlier ESPA Strengthening Research Capacity projects These projects will invited to send two people to the workshop, of whom one must be a researcher based in a developing country. There will be a number of additional places available on application and the first two days of the event will also be available online via webstreaming and subsequently for download as a podcast.

In addition to the workshop, potential applicants will be supported by a set of online resources including a partnership brokering service. All researchers with an interest in the call are encouraged to register their interest at www.esi.ac.uk/espa . A mailing list will be used to ensure that potential applicants are kept up to date as more material becomes available to support their application and participation in the ESPA programme.

Programme

A programme is available at: http://www.nesc.ac.uk/esi/events/1109/espa-workshop-agenda.pdf

The workshop will be held over three days (October 4-6, 2010).

The first two days, held at the e-Science Institute will be used to provide information about the call and the ESPA programme to potential applicants. This will include describing the philosophical approach being adopted by ESPA, as well as covering the logistics of making an application. In addition to a small number of keynote presentations, participants will hear presentations from a number of recently completed ESPA Capacity Building Projects.

The third day of the workshop will be the ESPA partnership workshop hosted by the ESPA Directorate and will provide a forum for participants to meet and discuss their ideas with other researchers and members of the Directorate. Successful ESPA projects will be expected to work as part of an ESPA community and this event will aim to support the development of global partnerships to deliver ESPA's research.

A more detailed programme will be provided to registered participants before the event.

Please note all 3 days of this workshop will now be held in the e-Science Institute
