Genomics Meets Grid Meeting

At a recent meeting of the IGF bioinformaticians, it became clear that one of the key issues was a lack of understanding in the genomics community about what Grid technology had to offer or a real understanding about what exactly it IS. This is a "workshop style" meeting to bring together genomics groups with grid technologists to try to address this issue and then to start to identify some pilot projects that could help to develop Grid technology for the genomics groups.

The meeting has been arranged for 11 and 12 November and will be held at the National e-Science Centre, Edinburgh - lunchtime to lunchtime. BBSRC will cover the cost of accommodation and travel to and from the venue.

The remit we are working to is:

The aim of the meeting is to investigate what Grid technology can offer biology - in particular the genomics groups supported through BBSRC's Investigating Gene Function Initiative and the BBSRC-supported Institutes. We have supported a post at the Grid support Centre to help these groups but we need to identify some demonstrator projects. The first aim is therefore to have a "brain storming" session in which the biology groups identify their current informatics problems and the Grid people explain how their technology might help. The next step would then be to identify some projects to take forward. It is intended that the biologists/bioinformaticians would make short presentations summarising what the key issues are for them and that the Grid technologists should listen and respond.

The workshop will be hosted by the e-Science Institute in Edinburgh which is a centre for education and research for e-Science, and provides new state-of-the art facilities including an Access Grid system.

Travel: The e-Science Institute is less than 15 minutes walk from Waverley rail station, and from St Andrews square bus stations. It is approximately 20 minutes by taxi from Edinburgh airport (40 minutes by bus). Please see our web site for a map of the area.
