One of the most commonly needed tools for projects running on a Grid is one to transfer data, especially large files, between sites. The Globus Alliance has re-implemented their highly popular GridFTP server to allow better, more flexible performance and functionality. Over the course of 2 days, GridFTP technology coordinator Bill Allcock will introduce GridFTP and give hands on instructions for system administrators, developers and users. Specifically, we will be walking through the installation and use of the new GT4.0 beta server and clients.

GridFTP is a high-performance, secure, reliable data transfer protocol optimized for high-bandwidth wide-area networks. The GridFTP protocol is based on FTP, the highly-popular Internet file transfer protocol. We have selected a set of protocol features and extensions defined already in IETF RFCs and added a few additional features to meet requirements from current data grid projects. The Globus Toolkit provides library interfaces to the GridFTP protocol, which will be the topic of these discussions.

Day One will consist of an introduction to Globus Toolkit data management, and a hands-on administrators tutorial, followed by a developers tutorial. Day two will repeat the introduction for new participants, and walk through the commonly used APIs and options with a user focus.

The National e-Science Centre, e-Science Institute in Edinburgh is a centre for education and research for e-Science, and provides new state-of-the art facilities including an Access Grid system.
