This course will provide an introduction to the software of the ATLAS experiment. It is targeted at the large number of people in the UK E-science community who are currently trying to get to grips with the ATLAS software and development environment. The course aims to hasten the induction of new E-science developers into the culture of ATLAS software development. It will attempt to cover the knowledge required to be an effective developer and demonstrate how to achieve some typical developers' tasks. It will draw on the experiences of some recent adopters who are aware of the pitfalls and more experienced developers who have an in-depth knowledge of the framework. The course format will include presentations, discussions, demonstrations and hands-on tutorials.
Part of the course (approx 4 hours) will be a hands-on session in which you will learn how to run the atlas software from simulation through to analysis. This is limited to 20 places and is aimed at newcomers. Computers will be provided for this. If you do not get a place in the hands-on session, you will have the option of following the course as a self-study exercise if you bring a laptop with you. Alternatively you may use the time to review and discuss any aspect of the course with other attendees. This option would suit those who already have some experience with the atlas software.
This event is aimed primarily at ATLAS-UK E-science project staff and related UK university/lab staff. If places permit, it may also be of interested to other UK-based ATLAS and GridPP developers.
