ESLEA, an EPSRC-funded project, aims to demonstrate the potential benefits of circuit-switched optical networks (lightpaths) to the UK e-Science community. This is being achieved by running a number of “proof of benefit” pilot applications over UKLight, the UK’s first national wavelength agile optical research network. UKLight provides a new way for researchers to obtain dedicated "lightpaths" between remote sites and to deploy and test novel networking methods and technologies. It facilitates collaboration on global projects by providing a point of access to the fast growing international optical R&D infrastructure. A diverse range of data-intensive fields of academic endeavour are participating in ESLEA project; all these groups require the integration of high-bandwidth switched lightpath circuits into their experimental and analysis infrastructure for international transport of high-volume applications data. In addition, network protocol research and development of circuit reservation mechanisms has been carried out to help the pilot applications to exploit the UKLight infrastructure effectively. Further information about ESLEA can be viewed at www.eslea.uklight.ac.uk. ESLEA activities are now coming to an end and work will finish from February to July 2007, depending upon the terms of funding of each pilot application. The first quarter of 2007 is considered the optimum time to hold a closing conference for the project. The objectives of the conference are to:
The deliverables of the conference will be electronic and printed conference proceedings. Target Audience
The international e-science community will also be targeted, including representatives from network providers and end user communities. ProgrammeThe following topics above are indicative of the planned scope of the conference, being based largely around the ESLEA applications using UKLight:
Please Click here to view abstracts of the above presentations. The conference dinner will be held at the George Hotel on the 27th March 2007 at 19:00. Please note that the organisers will wish to contact attendees after the event. Presentation SlidesAll speakers will be requested to provide their presentation slides in MS PowerPoint or pdf format by 16 March 2007 for review by the Conference Organising Committee. Speakers will be able to update their slides up until 30 minutes before their session begins. Speakers will not be allowed to show their slides from their own laptops. In the event that a speaker wishes to show a demo in addition to the presentation slides, an additional screen and connection for his/her pc will be provided. The request for this should be made to the Conference Organiser. PublicationAuthors of abstracts that are selected to be presented at the conference and all invited speakers will be encouraged to submit a full paper of up to 4 pages. Poster submissions will also be accepted and presenters will also be encouraged to submit a paper of up to 4 pages. Formatting guidelines for papers can be downloaded here. The compressed ESLEA.zip file contains instructions (PoSauthmanual.pdf), a template for LATEX users (PoS.cls, PoSlogo.ps and PoSlogo.pdf) and a template for MS Word users (PoStemplate-1.doc). Proceedings will be published in hard copy print and online at PoS - Proceedings of Science ( http://pos.sissa.it) - a service based on the Open Access philosophy. PoS is organized by SISSA Medialab, a spin-off company of the International School for Advanced Studies based in Trieste, making the most of its longstanding experience in the field of online publishing, creating and running electronic journals like JHEP ( http://jhep.sissa.it), JCAP (http://jcap.sissa.it), JSTAT ( https://jstat.sissa.it), JINST ( http://jinst.sissa.it) and JCOM ( http://jcom.sissa.it). With Open Access a much wider diffusion is possible, as the published material is no longer read only by those who purchase the printed volume, but is made available online with no time limit. PoS has made a strong choice for Open Access, choosing a suitable model for copyright that is fully retained by the author (see http://pos.sissa.it/POSlicense.html). Important Dates
