The strong methodological commons between the biological sciences and various fields textual analysis provided some of the earliest examples of concrete interdisciplinary collaboration between the ’hard’ sciences and humanities. The exploration and formalization of such crossovers heralded by the advent of e-science since 2001, and the emergence of robust cyberinfrastructure to support and facilitate such collaborative research, provides a new basis for exploring the interface between biology and text. This expert two-day international workshop will showcase relevant cutting-edge research from the biological and textual communities; and attempt to define a research agenda for future co-operation between them. Themes of the workshop will include:

  • Application of biological cladistic analysis to stemmatic studies in textual criticism
  • Application of parsing methods (linguistics) to protein folding (biology)
  • Comparing ageing of organisms with concept evolution in literary text
  • Comparing DNA transcription with complex textual structures
  • Commonalities in the use of ontologies in biology and textual information retrieval
  • Application of biological methods for dealing with very large textual corpora and text mining
  • Further methodological links between the biological sciences, bioinformatics and advanced computational methods
