Courses
The MSc programme comprises two semesters of taught courses, followed by a three-month Individual Research Project. The core of the taught component is the following set of eight mandatory courses:
Semester 1:
- Introduction to Scientific Data
- Introduction to Java Programming
- Web Programming
- Computing with Distributed Resources
Semester 2:
- Internet Computing
- Topics in Distributed Scientific Computing
- Project Preparation (Distributed Scientific Computing)
- Software Architecture, Process and Management
Students also take four optional courses, drawn from a large pool, which enables them to tailor their personal curriculum to their individual interests. Possible options include courses from the Informatics MSc, the MPhys programmes in Physics and Astrophysics (PDF file), and the MSc in Geographical Information Science, plus additional courses covering the application of e-Science to particular scientific domains, such as `The Virtual Observatory' for astronomers.
