The prestigious HPC Challenge was held at the recent SC2002 conference in Baltimore, USA. The awards honour participants in three categories for innovative uses of High Performance Computing. The three awards are:

    Most Innovative Data-Intensive Application
    Most Geographically Distributed Application
    Most Heterogeneous Set of Platforms
Winners of all three awards can be directly linked with the UK e-Science Programme.


The UK e-Science Pilot Project: DiscoveryNet won the Most Innovative Data-Intensive Application platinum award. The aim of the DiscoveryNet project is to build an e-science platform for scientific discovery from data generated from various high throughput devices. The project is based at Imperial College of Science Technology and Medicine London. The challenge team at SC2002 was led by Professor Yike Guo and Dr John Hassard. For further information see:

Global Grid Collaboration

The Most Geographically Distributed Application and the Most Heterogeneous Set of Platforms awards were won by a Global Grid Testbed Collaboration including representative from 4 UK e-Science Centres. Around 70 machines, in 14 countries, on 5 continents, ranging from a Sony Playstation to 1024 processor Linux clusters were involved in the accomplishment. The team were able to demonstrate 4 different applications running on this collection of machines. Testbed collaborators from the UK were Jonathan Giddy (University of Cardiff), Mark McKeown, Michael Jones (University of Manchester), Mark Hayes (University of Cambridge), David Baker and Simon Cox (University of Southampton). The Global Grid Collaboration led by Ed Seidel (Max-Planck-Institut fuer Gravitationsphysik), In association with John Shalf (Lawrence Berkley National Laboratory) and his team, also attained the Bandwidth Challenge award by sustaining 16.8Gbits/sec of data from a Cactus simulation running remotely (from various sites), to the show floor.
